Adult Sunday School Classes

The goal of Sunday School at Grace is to help fulfill the commission to the church as found in Ephesians 4:11-13: "And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ".

Our desire is that each member of the body be fully equipped to carry out the work of the ministry that God has given to them. Therefore, our adult Sunday School ministry provides instruction in a variety of areas including: ongoing Bible book studies which focus on the proper means of interpreting and applying the Scriptures directly; topical studies (Biblical parenting, Biblical counseling, Biblical marriage roles, etc.) to help address what the Bible says about honoring Christ in every sphere of life; and overview studies (Firm Foundations, Old Testament Survery, New Testament Survey, etc.) which ground believers in the big picture of God's Word.

In each of these classes our teachers seek to accomplish the following mandate, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15). Thus, while we encourage and foster discussion and interaction, we are careful to correct erroneous views, and help direct proper application.

Current Classes

The following classes will be meeting Spring/Summer 2009:

Sermon on the Mount
Teachers: Paul Edmiston & Andy Smith
What does true Christianity look like?  Jesus' Sermon on the Mount answers this question by painting a picture of the spiritual motivations, attitudes, words, and actions that characterize a true follower of Christ.  The purpose of the class is to exposit this powerful portion of Scripture while drawing out the myriad of practical applications to personal life, the church, our community, and the world.  Specific emphasis will be placed on how we as believers are being used of the Lord to impact those we interact with (or should interact with!) daily - in our jobs, activities, and neighborhoods.

Exposition of Philippians
Teachers: Dave Nickerson & Ron O'Dell
Do you want to see the unity of the church increased?  Do you desire to live the Christian life with passion, humility, and joy?  Then the book of Philippians is for you.  Few books of the Bible are filled with more joy and encouragement then the letter to the believers at Philippi.  The emphasis in this class in on the verse by verse exposition of the text to draw out the powerful, practical, life-changing principles for spiritual growth laid out by the Apostle Paul.  Our desire is to model the literal, grammatical, historical approach to Bible study that will allow every believer to access the rich treasure found in God's Word.

Principles of Prayer
Teachers: Chris Riser & Brian Beemer
Nothing brings greater humility to the soul than a discussion of our spiritual discipline (or lack thereof) in prayer! Yet God's Word is full of more prayers and exhortations to pray than nearly any other single subject.  Our purpose in this class is to begin with the exposition of selected prayers of Jesus and Paul, then to work through a framework of the principles and practice of prayer that should undergird the life of every believer and characterize every church.  Additionally, we will seek to hold one another accountable in the daily exercise of this discipline/delight during the duration of the class.
